Description:
Located on the slopes of the Turrialba volcano, Aquiares Estate is named after the indigenous Huetar word which means “land between rivers”. This washed coffee, named Entre Rios, is also a nod to the physical landscape that surrounds the farm and the two rivers it is nestled between. This connection to the land transcends Aquiares Estate’s entire approach to coffee. Their approach to farming is wholistic, applying ecological principles and seeking to build soil and plant health. They’ve planted over 50,000 shade trees, 20% of the farm is dedicated exclusively to conservation, and they’re certified Carbon-Neutral! Calling it a farm actually feels a bit misleading - they’re a community. Nestled within the farm is a small town of almost 2,000 people. In an effort to promote home ownership in the community, the farm gave bonuses to all workers and offered assistance applying for loans. As a result, over 96% of the farm workers are homeowners.
This is our sixth year bringing in their coffee, and we plan on growing our purchasing from them. A big part of this is because we strongly believe in their model and values, but obviously the coffees are equally amazing. With this blend of Marasella and Red Obata varieties, we aimed to highlight the creamy sweetness that reminded us of hot cocoa, chocolate oranges, and cozy Sunday mornings.
