Description:
Monkaaba is a producers collective in the southern department of Huila, Colombia. They’ve been working closely with Montreal-based importer Semilla Coffee over many years, and are building a model centred on quality and true sustainability. Most producers are young (under 35), and had historically sold coffee on the “black market” due to limited access to specialty buyers. The group aims to build producer solidarity and visibility, garnering more attention from the speciality scene every year.

This lot is unique as it is composed of 100% SL28 variety. This variety was developed in the famous Scotts Laboratories in Kenya, and is mainly still grown in East Africa. Producers in Latin America are beginning to use SLs for their high cup quality and their suitability to the local climate. If you’re a fan of bright, juicy Kenyans, this is a great opportunity to try out a Kenyan cherry grown in Colombian terroir!
