Description:In the last 4-5 years, we’ve turned a lot of our attention and buying onto Peru, particularly in the northern department of Cajamarca. Young producers there are leading the charge and pushing quality to new heights. Gone are the days of no-name washed blends from 5 different departments - Cajamarca is one of the most exciting origins in our portfolio.
This coffee is a superb example of what makes this region so special. Upon first sips, I’m reminded of chocolate covered berries – somehow simultaneously creamy and rich, but with distinctly fruity and bright acidity. With this blend, I’m reminded of jammy berries (think raspberry or mulberry), creamy white chocolate, and a subtle vanilla aroma in the finish.
The producer responsible for this delicious lot is David Flores – the 3rd generation farmer behind Finca El Morito. Coffee farming in the Flores family began way back in 1920 with David’s grandfather, Don Jesús Flores Guevara. David’s journey into the coffee rabbit hole began when he joined his father, Don Faustino, to sell their beans at a local co-op. Seeing the quality control team at the co-op roast samples, cup coffee, and talk about varieties and processing inspired him. David then founded Finca El Morito in 2016 as an umbrella brand to integrate all the Flores-Chilcon family farms in the San Ignacio area and work cooperatively to improve quality. Recognition for this work came in 2018 when Finca El Morito placed 20th in Peru’s Cup of Excellence competition. Word spread and more family members joined David and Faustino under the Finca El Morito label, which now comprises 150 hectares of family farms.
This lot is a washed blend of farms within the El Morito network. Felipe Estela Molina, Yulisa Estela, Roger Chilcon, Lenin Flores, and Jorge Chavez all contributed coffee to this blend, alongside coffees from David and Don Faustino.
